Smart Water Solutions

Smart Water Solutions: from strategy to operations

We bring field experience, engineering and digital transformation to improve water utilities’ management, operations and maintenance. Based in Spain, we work with operators, universities and technology partners to turn real needs into projects and practical solutions.

Every utility has a different starting point. We review its facilities, processes and data, identify opportunities and set achievable priorities. Our work combines advisory services for water utilities, especially in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, with international research and development (R&D) collaboration.

Areas of work

A complete perspective, with practical solutions

We connect strategy with plant and network needs. Operational experience helps define what to improve, which technology is needed and how to verify results, from source to customer.

01

Governance, strategy and investment

We help set priorities and turn separate needs into programmes that can be delivered.

  • Institutional and operational assessment.
  • Project prioritisation, investment portfolios and roadmaps.
  • Scope, requirements, indicators and results monitoring.
02

Operations, maintenance and assets

We strengthen the ability to operate reliably, maintain equipment effectively and anticipate failures.

  • Processes, roles, procedures and operational performance.
  • Maintenance plans, criticality, reliability and CMMS, including MAXIMO and SAP PM.
  • Asset management, spare parts, work orders and indicators.
03

Water infrastructure and networks

We connect source and facility management with the quality and continuity of customer service.

  • Water sources, lakes and storage reservoirs; intakes and wells.
  • Treatment plants, pumping stations and distribution networks.
  • Non-revenue water (NRW) reduction, district metered areas (DMA), GIS and hydraulic performance assessment.
04

Applied digital transformation

We select and integrate technology that addresses real needs and can be sustained in operation.

  • Instrumentation, PLC/RTU, telemetry, SCADA/DCS, IT/OT integration and industrial cybersecurity.
  • Smart metering, AMI/MDM, IIoT, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT and data platforms.
  • Analytics, artificial intelligence and digital twins, with models and pilots developed with specialist partners.

From data to operations

Technology should improve the service

A system creates value when it improves decisions and operational results. We assess instrumentation, historical data quality, assets and the existing architecture to use available resources and define the improvements needed.

We define requirements, interfaces and implementation stages. We support specifications, supplier coordination, integration, testing, commissioning and training, using agreed indicators to verify improvements.

Engineering and applied R&D

Field experience, research and validation

In modernisation projects, we contribute scope definition, technical leadership and supervision alongside engineering firms and integrators. In R&D projects, Smart Water Institute brings field experience: assessment, needs identification, operational requirements and support for integration and testing.

Universities and research centres contribute research, models, algorithms and code development; the water utility provides facilities, authorised data and staff to validate the solution. We can explore AI-driven dynamic setpoints, leak detection or predictive maintenance, depending on each project’s needs and feasibility.

How we add value

From assessment to measurable results

01

Understand

We visit facilities and review processes, assets, data and capabilities with operations and maintenance managers.

02

Prioritise

We identify projects by impact, urgency, cost and feasibility, and agree on objectives, resources and evaluation criteria.

03

Implement

We coordinate integration, testing and, where appropriate, a supervised pilot with plant teams and technical partners.

04

Measure and adjust

We compare results with the initial situation, document improvements and prepare their transfer and potential application at other facilities.
